Lot 2569
1803 Draped Bust Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-64 Overton-103. NGC #2032604-005. Nice original toning on both sides. Seldom seen this nice. One of three Large 3 die pairings for the date, Overton-103 is recognized by its reverse, which has an arrowhead past the right upright of the N in UNITED. Colorful golden-brown and navy-blue shades overlay the light slate-gray patina. The main devices are boldly struck, including the breast feathers, although a few of the stars on the obverse do not possess crisp centers. There is only one short mark on the shoulder, as the surfaces are impressively clean and beautiful. Struck from clashed dies, with raised lines from the shield throughout Liberty's ear; a remarkable coin in this outstanding condition, truly remarkable!

1803 Draped Bust Half Dollars are scarce in higher grades, but are most often available in Fine through EF condition. The Overton Condition Census for O-103 is headed by a pair of AU50 examples, curiously, meaning that the authors of that book weren't apprised of this MS64 specimen. As an issue, the Large 3 becomes rare in AU, and attractive Mint State pieces are extremely rare. The present coin is the single finest certified by either major service. Pop 1; none finer.
Estimated Value $70,000 - 75,000.

1809 Capped Bust Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-64. Well struck and lightly toned. A highly lustrous early Bust half dollar with a nuance of champagne toning on both sides, all of which is underpinned by full satin freshness. Struck from typically-sharp dies that imported a firm texture, especially at the outer periphery. Pop 12; 5 finer; 4 in 65; 1 in 66.
Estimated Value $3,500 - 3,800.

1815 Capped Bust Half Dollar. 5 over 2. PCGS graded EF-45. A pleasing problem-free example of this sought-after key date, with light to moderate clash marks as made. Pleasing antique toning surrounds the borders on both sides. By a wide margin, the lowest mintage date in the entire Bust Half series, only 47,150 struck. Pop 27; 59 finer (PCGS # 6108) .

1827 Capped Bust Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. Mostly untoned. Full radial luster on satiny champagne gold and gray surfaces, the outbound stress lines of the metal flow being typical for these "struck without a collar" early bust coins. A touch of weakness is seen at the clasp at Liberty's shoulder on the obverse, with much sharper than average centers on the reverse, indicating an above-average coin. A gem, in other words, and destined for a high quality collection.

1828 Capped Bust Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-66. Very sharp impression and well toned. Iridescent satin to frosted luster resonates off of the surface of this virtually pristine Gem. If one were to take a poll, we'd see that the strike is nonstandard for the issue in being sharp with the excellent metal flows on both sides into the deepest die recesses; in other words, a very bold strike. The color is outstanding as well, with deepest shades of blue and iridescence toward the margin, leaving the center golden with crimson accents. Pop 7; none finer.

1828 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Square base 2, small 8's, large letters. NGC graded MS-62. Lightly toned at the perhipery (album toning?), yet basically very choice with gray-white in centers. The few wispy abrasions do not detract from the overall pleasing eye appeal of this choice example. Pop 1; none finer.

1836 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded edge. NGC graded Proof 63. Needle sharp with bluish-grey toning. Both sides are remarkably lustrous with the silvery luster overlaid by a thin veil of color; best of all, the devices are nicely struck with just outstanding detail at the hair curls and feather details.

The Mint had been using stem power presses to strike Cents in 1835; the first Half Dollars were made on the new presses in November 8, 1836. Some Proofs were made first. Mint Director Levi Woodbury sent some, if not all of these specimens to Secretary of the Treasury Levi Woodbury. The Proofs were followed by approximately 1,200 business strikes, of which this is a choice example. The limited original mintage explains the fact that the 1836 is one of the most eagerly sought, key-date issues in the entire U.S. Half Dollar series. Pop 3; 5 finer; 3 in 64; 2 in 65.

1847-O Liberty Seated Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-63 PQ. Magenta and golden sunset toning. Well struck. The 1847-O is not generally considered a rare date among early New Orleans Mint half dollars mainly due to its mintage of nearly 2.6 million pieces -- comparatively high. These factors ignore its true scarcity in the collector marketplace, however, especially the better grades. This nicely toned example is well placed for a high quality set of seated Liberty half dollars, struck boldly and with resolute precision on the key devices. Pop 4 finer in 64. (PCGS # 6259) .

1855-O Liberty Seated Half Dollar. Arrows. PCGS graded MS-64. Lightly toned. Well struck and frosty. A few marks in the fields otherwise MS65. Full russet and reddish brown patina mixes into some steel colored iridescence over virtually undisturbed mint luster that is complete on both sides. For an 1855 seated Liberty half dollar, there is a meticulous strike on every device -- exactly what collectors hope for in a With Arrows Type. Unlike the many that don't quite make it to full MS64 grade, this piece is right up against the line separating it from Gem quality, being extra crisp, twice as sharp as an average specimen. For that reason, the numerical condition is conservative. Pop 56; 21 finer. (PCGS # 6283) .

Lot 2593
1895 Barber Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 68 Star. A beautiful gem toned barber half. As pretty a coin you could wish for. This is a spectacular coin, indeed a bold Proof striking! It is a coin that has been preserved careful except for the maturation of gorgeous toning that developed over more than a century. The toning strikes us as all-original, which is what bidders of high-caliber Barber Proofs have a preference for as seen in the prices realized notices. The toning ranges through the more typical shades of "old silver" iridescence from deep golden browns to unusual and lovely shades of pastel lavender and blue. There are no hairlines on either side. For that matter, the fields are deeply and perfectly mirrored with desirable mint frost prominent on the devices. As is often the case, this yields gorgeous cameo contrast. A total of 880 Proofs were made in 1895. It stands to reason, then, we are inclined to look upon this remarkable Proof 68 as being exceedingly special. By a series of the most remarkable chances, it is being brought to you in near perfect condition. 880 proofs minted. NGC #1848580-011. Pop 2; none finer.

1907 Barber Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 67 Cameo. Fully white gem. A satiny frosted head surrounded by untoned mirror-bright fields makes for a strikingly beautiful example of this Barber Proof, the reverse as well as the obverse bright and glinting. Crisply struck and problem-free. A superb specimen for the collector. Pop 3; 2 finer; 1 in 67*; 1 in 68.

Charles E. Barber's half dollar began as a mirror-image copy of the Morgan dollar head, though cropped off most of Miss Anna Willess Williams's hair and concealed the rest within an enlarged cap. Barber also removed the assorted vegetable matter from the brim of the cap (retaining the word LIBERTY), replacing the various stalks with a simple laurel wreath, placing IN GOD WE TRUST above.

For the reverse, Barber improved on Robert Scot's work of 91 years earlier by refashioning the Great Seal of the United States. His earlier patterns (dated 1891, Judd 1766, 1765, 1764, 1762) retained the clouds above eagle; his final design (as seen here) dropped them, reducing an otherwise crowded effect to tolerable levels.

1908-S Barber Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-66. Delicate lavender toning. From stem to stern a beautifully toned gem with impressive mint sparkle over spotless surfaces. Well struck on the main devices. Just a bit shy of a full strike here and there on the reverse, once again each side is well balanced and shows equal beautiful toning.

The 1908-S is among the rarest late dates in the Barber half series, almost unavailable in MS66 condition. Why this is true for the 1908-S, even when more than 1.6 million pieces were struck, is one of those mysteries. Attrition, it seems, has winnowed the number of high grade examples that are available. Such rarities can often pass unnoticed for years by collectors like figures in a dream, before one hits the auction block and the cognoscenti unleash their bidding fury like a Fourth of July fireworks display.
